After two years in which he failed to make a decent impression, Sergino Dest left Barcelona this past summer to sign for AC Milan on a season-long loan deal.

However, things have not been easy for the right-back in Italy as well. Indeed, the 22-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a regular in Stefano Pioli’s side, playing just nine matches across all competitions, of which only two have been from the start.

But, Dest made a big impression for the United States Men’s National Team at the FIFA World Cup 2022 recently. And it has seemingly convinced AC Milan to consider making the defender’s signing permanent.

This claim comes from Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (h/t Mundo Deportivo), which states that the Rossoneri are now willing to pay €20 million in order to make the right-back’s signing permanent at the end of the season.

Dest featured in all four of USMNT’s matches at the World Cup and made a positive impression even though they were eliminated in the Round of 16 stage by the Netherlands.

The 22-year-old played 309 minutes of football for his national team, just a little shy of the total game-time he has accrued with Milan this season (373 minutes), and even set up a goal at the tournament in Qatar.

Dest provided a constant attacking outlet down the right side for USMNT and his performances have now seemingly convinced Milan to trigger the €20 million purchase option included in the loan agreement with Barcelona.

The 22-year-old, for his part, will now hope to build on his World Cup form and earn a greater role at San Siro over the course of the season, so that he can make an even stronger case for a permanent switch.

This development certainly bodes well for Barça, who are in need of cash injection amidst financial problems at the club.
