AC Milan are set to sign Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello in the summer, reports transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian will join the San Siro club for free when his contract runs out at the end of the season.
Milan want quality cover for French goalie Mike Maignan. The 27-year-old has been out of action with a calf injury since September 2022.
He missed the World Cup in Qatar as a result and Ciprian Tatarusanu has been in goal for Stefano Pioli’s side.
However, the 37-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is expected to leave.
Milan brought in Colombian goalie Davis Vasquez from Paraguayan club Guarani last month.
The Italian club were exploring the possibility of signing Sportiello. However, Atalanta refused to let him go and Milan moved for Vasquez.
Antonio Mirante is also expected to leave San Siro, and the club want stiff competition for Maignan.
Sportiello has played second fiddle to Juan Musso for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side. The 30-year-old has played seven Serie A games this term.
Milan won the title last term but are 18 points off league leaders Napoli after 22 games.
They are fifth in the table but level on points with third-placed Atalanta and fourth-placed AS Roma.
Three points separate them from Inter Milan and they will fancy their chances of finishing in the top four. They have won just one of their last six league games.
Tatarusanu has not covered himself in glory at times, and things would have been different with Maignan in goal.
Sportiello could have also made a big difference, but Milan will have to wait until summer.
