AC Milan are looking to retain the influence of club legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic by extending his contract for another year.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the club have already tabled contract terms worth €1.5 million plus bonuses, which is similar to the previous deal he signed just eight months ago.

Ibrahimovic extended his previous deal despite struggling with a knee problem that eventually kept him out for nine months after undergoing surgery.

The 41-year-old refuted speculation he was considering retirement while undergoing recovery from the knee injury, insisting that he would return stronger.

He looked to have kept to his word as he made his return from the lengthy lay-off in the 2-0 success over Atalanta at the San Siro last month, replacing Olivier Giroud for the final 15 minutes.

Having failed to find the net in subsequent cameo appearances against Fiorentina and Salernitana, Ibrahimovic opened his account from the penalty spot in the 3-1 defeat to Udinese.

The former Barcelona man became the oldest Serie A captain when he led his team out at the Darcia Arena before becoming the league’s oldest-ever scorer at 41 and 166 days old.

Ibrahimovic received a call-up to the Swedish national team for their European Championship qualifier games against Belgium and Azerbaijan.

The former Juventus star was a 73rd-minute substitute in the 3-0 defeat to Belgium but missed the 5-0 thrashing of Azerbaijan three days later.

Milan have endured an abysmal campaign in a bid to defend their Scudetto crown, but have progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals after swatting aside Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16.

Going all the way in Europe’s premium tournament will prove a tough task for Stefano Pioli’s side, and they will be relying on the influence of Ibrahimovic as they inch closer to an eighth European triumph.
