AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni has stated that it is essential that a new stadium is built that will replace San Siro, which they currently share with city rivals Inter.

AC Milan moved in to San Siro upon its completion in 1926 and Inter joined them as co-tenants following the second world war, during which their stadium was destroyed and the two clubs have shared plans to build a new state of the art stadium to replace it.

On top of a state of the art stadium, the clubs have plans to completely revitalise the surrounding area by constructing hotels, restaurants and retail spaces among other things.

The project is expected to cost in excess of €1 billion and the two clubs are expected to choose between the two competing projects just shortly.

“It is essential to have a new stadium for the economic balance of the club. In July last year, a project was presented which had been examined by the council, which required changes,” he explained to the gathered media after AC Milan’s annual shareholders meeting, as reported by Italian news outlet PassioneInter.com.

“We discussed these changes and in a few days we will present the project to the city council. We want to save part of the Meazza, dedicating the area to non-professional sports, therefore available to the city.

“There is also a reduction of the real estate area to 145,000 square meters. We expect the council to examine the project after the technical offices have evaluated it, we trust it will take a short time. The executive design will start after approval as it is very expensive. I am optimistic for the future.”
