Legendary former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta feels that Inter forward Lautaro Martinez has not yet lived up to his talents this season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Costacurta gave the view that the Argentine needs to deal with bad periods in form better, and suggested that he should be played as a lone striker.

Martinez has been enjoying his most emphatic form of the entire campaign during the final weeks, bagging an impressive thirteen goals from thirteen matches following his match-winning brace against Cagliari yesterday evening.

The feeling persists, however, that the 24-year-old is not always able to show his best in some matches, particularly against top-class opposition and defenders.

Costacurta feels that while the potential is certainly there, Martinez has not met his expectations this season even with his storming end to the campaign.

“Lautaro, as well as the whole team, went through a very difficult period,” he said in reference to the striker’s goal drought during the Nerazzurri’s March and April slump.

“But something more had to be expected from him here,” Costacurta went on. “I have my own idea – he should play as the first striker, in any case he has to improve. He manages periods of bad form badly.”
