AC Milan confirmed as Newcastle United Women’s Sela Cup opponents | OneFootball

Italian giants AC Milan will provide the opposition for Newcastle United Women in the inaugural Women’s Sela Cup at St. James’ Park next month.

The Magpies announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

After the success of last season’s men’s Sela Cup event, Becky Langley’s women’s side will make their tournament debut this year.

Newcastle United Women’s opponents were not determined at the time of the competition launch, however, it has now been revealed that they will face Italian top flight side AC Milan. The Rossonere ended the 2023/2024 Serie A Femminile eBay regular season in sixth position and the club have made some astute signings over the summer in a bid to challenge in the top half of the table this term. AC Milan should be excellent opponents for Newcastle United as they prepare for their first season in the elite game.

Speaking following the announcement of AC Milan’s participation, Newcastle United Women boss Langley said “The excitement ahead of this season continues to build after an amazing couple of years celebrating promotions. This team has been on an incredible journey and special parts of this have been playing at St. James’ Park in front of thousands of passionate fans.

“To be able to face European opposition like AC Milan Women, at St. James’ Park, is great as it will give us a different test and help with our preparations ahead of this coming season, which we can’t wait start.”

The ‘Sela Weekender’ kicks-off with Newcastle United’s men’s team’s pre-season friendly against Spanish club Girona FC at St. James’ Park on Friday 9 August 2024 (kick-off 7.30pm). The Sela Cup will then be played out the following day. Newcastle United Women’s fixture against AC Milan will kick-off at 1pm before Eddie Howe’s men’s side will face Stade Brestois in the second game at 4pm.
