AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli believes that even if they’d had the extra commitment of Champions League knockout rounds, Inter would have come back to win the Scudetto last season.

Speaking in a press conference, reported by FCInterNews, the Italian dismissed the idea that being eliminated from the Champions League early was a major factor in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A title win.

Despite having an overall very successful season last campaign, winning the Scudetto in emphatic fashion after eleven years without doing so, the Champions League was a major disappointment for the Nerazzurri.

Inter exited from the group stage of Europe’s top competition for the third year running and were not even involved in the Europa League after Christmas.

Some speculated that this allowed Inter to focus more on their Scudetto charge and was a key factor in their eventual triumph, but Pioli doesn’t think that this is the case.

“Inter had a great second second half of the season and many have given their absence from the cup competitions as a reason for this,” he stated.

“I don’t know, I think that their qualities would have allowed them to do the same thing anyway,” he explained as his view on this idea.
