We’re reached matchday two of the Arnold Clark Cup where four of the best women’s nations in the game will be up against each other in a round robin tournament.
Here’s what went down.
Scorers: Gilles 7′.
Canada became the first team to win at the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup as Vanessa Gilles’ early goal was enough for them to overcome Germany.
The centre-back got away from her marker and headed home from Janine Beckie’s corner in the seventh minute.
Klara Buhl came closest to equalising for Germany just before half-time but her well-struck effort was denied by a brilliant one-handed save from Kailen Sheridan.
The Canadians felt like they should have had an advantage early in the second half when goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger took Nichelle Prince out from just outside the area which could’ve seen her receive her marching orders but no foul was awarded.
Gilles showed her importance down the other end, producing a number of blocks as Canada rode out the German wave of attack in the second half to seal victory.
England and Spain played out an entertaining goalless draw in a bruising encounter at Carrow Road.
Sarina Wiegman’s side gave a good account of themselves against the side tipped to be the favourites for this summer’s Euros and could’ve taken the lead at the start of the second half.
Substitute Lauren Hemp made room for a shot from just outside the box which rattled the crossbar.
Lucía García spurned a great chance for Spain when she found herself through on goal but put her shot wide.
Debutant Hannah Hampton then produced a stunning save to deny Athenea del Castillo in stoppage time but neither side could break the deadlock.
