FLW looks at two signings that Portsmouth should to make before the start of a very important campaign.
Portsmouth are set for one of their biggest seasons in recent history.
Pompey achieved promotion from League One last season as they finished top of the table on 97 points. This means they will be playing second-tier football for the first time in 12 years this season, and they will be absolutely desperate to establish themselves as a Championship club once again.
They will go into battle with John Mousinho standing in their dugout after he led the club to promotion in his first full season in management. The 38-year-old has become a hugely popular figure at Fratton Park, and despite lacking managerial experience in the Championship, he has shown some good qualities that will stand him in good stead for survival this season.
So far, it has been a rather busy summer transfer window as Mousinho builds his squad capable of competing in the second tier. The likes of ex-Oxford United star man, Josh Murphy, and ex-Barnsley defender, Jordan Williams, have walked through the doors at Fratton Park this summer, but their business is yet to be concluded.
Mousinho will likely be aiming to bring in a few more fresh faces before the start of their season on the 10th of August, when they meet promotion hopefuls, Leeds United.
Football League World looks at two players in particular that Pompey should be looking to sign.
Portsmouth fans would welcome Abu Kamara back with open arms this summer if the club were to re-sign the forward. The 21-year-old spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Portsmouth from Norwich City, and he played a huge part in their impressive League One title victory.
Kamara featured in all 46 league games for Pompey last season, scoring eight goals and assisting 10. He came on leaps and bounds over the course of the season and was a vital part of Mousinho's starting 11, featuring mostly on the right wing.
The 21-year-old has returned to his parent club, Norwich City, and has featured for them in pre-season as Johannes Hoff Thorup assessed his new squad. If the Canaries decide that Kamara will not feature much for them next season, Portsmouth will undoubtedly swoop in.
Pompey know exactly what they are getting from the forward, and although he has no real Championship experience, he has proved his worth in the Portsmouth side with his goals and creativity. Portsmouth fans will absolutely be wanting to see that deal be completed before the start of the season, as they would love to see Kamara in a blue shirt against Leeds on the opening day of the season.
Another player that Pompey supporters are very familiar with is Alex Robertson, who also spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Fratton Park. The Manchester City youngster is likely to go back out on loan this summer, and Pompey will be hoping that he makes a stunning return.
However, fellow Championship club, Cardiff City, have placed the midfielder on their radar, which will be a cause for concern for Portsmouth. Despite interest from Cardiff, Pompey boss John Mousinho remains optimistic of a reunion with the 21-year-old this summer.
Robertson was a key part of Pompey's midfield last season, having made 20 league starts and putting on consistently strong displays. Unfortunately, the midfielder suffered a season-ending injury in January, but that did not take away his performances from earlier in the campaign, and he still played a huge role in their promotion.
Robertson is another player who has no Championship experience, but Pompey would love to see him return if a deal with Cardiff fails to materialise.
