Amsterdam is set for a massive clash on Thursday as Ajax battle AEK Athens for a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The Dutch giants have improved on their initially turbulent season, and it’s imperative they remain in European competitions for manager John van’t Schip.

“I see it as our duty to get as far as possible in the Conference League,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

“It is another match in which we as a team have to continue what we are doing. That goes well in some parts, less so in others.

“Compared to five weeks ago, I think we are doing good. We are taking big, but slow steps. I walked into this club in the middle of the season, with no pre-season. You can’t expect major changes too fast.”

The one downside for Ajax will be the absences of veterans Steven Bergwijn (injured) and Steven Berghuis (suspended).

Regardless, Van’t Schip wholly backs his squad to get the job done in front of home fans.

“They are both of great value to the team. Because of their experience and age, but also because they are involved in many attacking actions,” he said of the duo.

“They are specific players that you don’t replace [easily]. If someone else plays, you also get a different type of game. We have to solve that in a creative way.”

The news of Brian Brobbey and Kristian Hlynsson being fully fit, however, will be a welcome boost for the hosts.
