Aberdeen set to land Sheffield Wednesday transfer target from Watford

Mattie Pollock has agreed to join Aberdeen from Watford, according to Football Insider.

The piece, written by Pete O’Rourke, does not explicitly state that Pollock would be heading to the Scottish Premiership on loan, but it is implied throughout.

Pollock has struggled for regular first team minutes for the Hornets this term, and some would have been surprised not to see an exit materialise at the back end of the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old’s contract runs until the summer of 2026, having signed from Grimsby Town before the 2021/22 campaign, and therefore a permanent move to Aberdeen does not seem to be on the cards for now.

Aberdeen are not competing as close to the top end of the Scottish Premiership as they would ordinarily like to be, sitting fifth with a two-point cushion on seventh-placed St Mirren, and Pollock would certainly be a smart addition to strengthen their backline.

Pollock spent last season as part of Cheltenham Town’s strong resistance under Michael Duff, and does seem ready for a step up from the bottom half of League One, which a move to a club the size of Aberdeen would represent.

There was third tier interest in Pollock’s services, but with the Hornets fairly astute in choosing loan destinations, their judgment should be trusted in sending Pollock north of the border.

WHAT YEAR WERE THE CLUB FOUNDED?

1881 1885

The Hornets’ capture of Ryan Porteous from Hibernian on Friday has probably sealed Pollock’s fate, for the rest of this season at least.

The Scotsman’s arrival would have pushed the 21-year-old further down the pecking order at Vicarage Road and made Watford’s decision for them, in terms of their short term plan for Pollock’s development.

Centre backs can develop later on in their careers than players in other positions, and that is a positive for the length of contract that Pollock has remaining, with the Hornets bringing him in from Grimsby Town just after winning promotion to the Premier League.

It is clear that there is a long term plan in place for his development.
