Aaron Mooy’s star role as Australia qualify for Last 16 | OneFootball

Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy played a star role for Australia this afternoon as they qualified for the Last 16. The 32-year-old was given the seemingly daunting task of curbing Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen.

Mooy was excellent in breaking up the Danes as they tried to push forward, marking Eriksen out of the game and limited them to a handful of chances.

In what was a frantic couple of second half minutes, France fell to a Tunisia goal meaning that the Aussies would need to win. This result was meant with cries of attack from the Aussie support and these calls were answered with a shock breakaway.

Progressing on the break, Australia broke at pace. Matt Leckie burst forward, lined up a shot and beat Kasper Schmeichel to score.

The Aussies now face the mouthwatering prospect of a game against Lionel Messi and co with a Last 16 tie against Argentina on Saturday.

Mooy made the move to Glasgow in the summer and it’s probably surprised many that he’s been able to perform at the level exhibited with the Scottish Champions. Initially, Mooy was slow to start but found his feet and oozed class. Ironically, his game time improved due to the injury to Callum McGregor and that has meant he’s gone into this tournament in fine fitness.
