A year to forget for Germany

It’s been a year to forget for Germany. As per Opta, Hansi Flick’s side have won just 33 percent of their matches in 2022, four wins in 12 games across all competitions. It’s the second lowest win percentage of the national team this millennium. Their win percentage was only lower in 2018 (31 percent, four wins in 13), a year in which they were also eliminated from the group stages at a World Cup.

Germany kicked off their 2022 with a 2-0 friendly win over Israel in March before a draw against the Netherlands. They finished third in their UEFA Nations League group which contained Italy, Hungary and England, winning just one of their six games in the competition.

Flick’s side then narrowly beat Oman in their friendly prior to the World Cup, before beating Costa Rica 4-2 in their final Group E game, a result that saw them eliminated from the tournament following Japan’s win over Spain.

Flick has received the backing of the DFB and will remain in charge for EURO 2024. Hans-Joachim Watzke stated on Thursday that sacking Flick, despite their poor performances in Qatar, was never an option.
