Jose Mourinho calls Tottenham a ‘pony’ in the Premier League title race

As reported by the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that his team are just ‘a small pony’ in the Premier League title race.

Tottenham moved to the top of the Premier League table following the goalless draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Following that game, we are now unbeaten in nine matches in a row in the Premier League, since the opening day defeat to Everton.

Naturally, talks of a tilt at the Premier League title have been doing the rounds. Mourinho, however, is insisting that Tottenham are not the favourites in the race for the title. (h/t Daily Star,)

“Tottenham is not a candidate. We are not even in the race. We are not a horse. I don’t know what the word is. We are the small, young horses. We are just a pony.”

The Portuguese tactician was in full praise of his players’ attitude and mentality, insisting that the players were far from happy with the draw.

“A draw at Stamford Bridge is usually a positive thing and staying top of the league is also a positive thing. But my dressing room isn’t happy with that and that is fantastic. It’s a complete change of mentality and personality. That was a game where we respected them and they respected us.”

Mourinho’s statements are just a tactic to not put any undue pressure on the players. With almost one-third of the season gone, sitting at the top is certainly a special feeling. But the race for the title is very close, as Liverpool are level on points in second while Chelsea, in third, are just a point below.

It is important to stay grounded and not get carried away, with still a large chunk of the season left to be played.
