According to the Daily Star, Prince William has revealed why he supports Aston Villa and not Manchester United.
The Duke of Cambridge is an ardent football follower who is a big fan of Aston Villa. A man set in his ways, we don’t think he will shift allegiances if Villa skipper Jack Grealish moves to Old Trafford.
A regular at Villa Park, Prince William would have been overjoyed that his side staved off relegation on the last day of the season.
Things could have been very different had he chosen to support either United or Chelsea. He confirmed in a talk with Peter Crouch that he watches Villa regularly and even looks up stats.
“Only in the last few years have I really got a grip of Villa as my team. I watch them a lot. I get into stats and I watch them every week.”
Prince William confirmed that he has been a fan of the Villans since his teenage days. He went on to add that he was intrigued by the support and the ethos that Villa brought to the table.
He was not keen to follow the crowd in supporting United or Chelsea who has been two of the most successful teams in the last two decades.
“I desperately didn’t want to support United or Chelsea like everyone else at school.”
Supporting United is a calling and we are pretty sure every fan thinks of their team in the same way. Given the joy that watching Villa gives him, we feel Prince William has made the right choice for himself.
Supporting a football club is all about identifying yourself with the institution. Villa is just one of five English teams to have won the European Cup/Champions League.
It is a pity he does not support us. He could have had much more to celebrate over the years.
