As they face life in League One and hope not to suffer relegation like they did in the 2020/21 season, Joey Barton is keen to add to his side ahead of the new campaign.

The Gas recently announced the signing of James Gibbons who has been with Port Vale for the last 13 years.

The defender made 25 league appearances and scored two goals last season as his side also achieved promotion to League One but via the play-offs.

Following the addition, we asked FLW’s Bristol Rovers’ fan pundit Charlie Haynes for his verdict: “Yeah, James Gibbons from Port Vale seems like a quality signing.

“A lot of Port Vale fans were gutted that he left and thought he’d go to a higher end League One club or a Championship club.

“So yeah, really happy that we’ve got what seems to be a highly named player, really good player and very versatile as well so hopefully he can be a really good signing and he also scored on his debut on pre-season as well.”

The Verdict:

It seems as though life at Rovers has got off to a good start for James Gibson and he will be hoping this can carry on throughout the season.

This is a good signing for Joey Barton’s side as he has been a solid defender with Port Vale over the last number of seasons.

There is the worry that he hasn’t yet played in League One. However, he was part of a side that earned the step-up last season and at 24-years-old, it’s probably the right time for him to develop further now.
