Last week, Iker Muniain announced that he will be leaving Athletic Club upon the expiry of his contract, thus ending his 15-year stay in the first team. The 31-year-old will depart as a legend, especially after helping Los Leones win their first Copa del Rey title in 40 years at the start of April.
Muniain is keen for a new challenge, and his preferred next destination has been revealed to be Argentinian giants River Plate. A deal could be on, as their second vice-president Ignacio Villarroel recently addressed the speculation, as per MD.
“He is a player of the highest level, who has already shown his love for the club by escaping from the training camp the night before an Athletic match to go to the Bernabeu to watch the final of the Libertadores.
“A player of his stature is never ruled out. The market is still to open, it open on June 1st, so there is no rush.”
It remains to be seen whether Muniain gets his dream move to River in the summer. For now, his focus will be on Athletic Club for the remaining five matches of the season.
