FLW's Portsmouth fan pundit has given his verdict on Regan Poole's contract situation going into 2025

Regan Poole is one Portsmouth player whose contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The Welshman was out of action for almost a full year with injury, meaning he managed just 14 appearances in League One last season as the team gained promotion to the Championship (all stats from Fbref).

However, the defender has returned to the side in recent weeks, making his comeback off the bench in their 3-0 loss to West Brom in September.

The 26-year-old has played in each of their four league games since then, including the full 90 minutes on three occasions.

But he could be set to depart Fratton Park in 2025 unless a contract extension can be agreed before the end of the season.

When asked whether Poole’s contract should be renewed, FLW’s Portsmouth fan pundit Miltos Ioannidis claimed that he must be kept by the club.

He believes Poole has the most talent of any player in the squad, which should be making him an essential part of their long-term plans.

“Tying down Regan Poole to a brand new contract just seems like a no-brainer to me,” Ioannidis told Football League World.

“I just think, I understand the logic behind not having done that yet because he obviously he was out for 11 months.

“But I can comfortably say Regan is probably the best player we have in the squad in terms of quality and in terms of capability to adapt to this level here in the Championship.

“I can remember the start of last season, he looked a level above in every single minute that he played for us up until the point where he got injured.

“And so I think even attempting Regan down to a new deal is just an absolute no-brainer of a move.

“I hope we do that.

“As we’ve done with a lot of other players that we have right now.

“Cause I think Regan Poole is the best player we have got.”

Regan Poole’s importance to Portsmouth

Poole signed for Portsmouth in the summer of 2023 from Lincoln City, and immediately cemented himself as a key part of the squad upon his arrival.

However, an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered last November meant he missed most of the League One campaign, only returning last month.

When available, he’s been a regular starter under John Mousinho, and the Portsmouth manager will surely be keen to extend the players’ stay with the club.

Poole is one of seven Pompey players that could depart as free agents in 2025 due to expiring contracts, as things stand.

Keeping Regan Poole is a no-brainer for Portsmouth

Poole’s injury last season was incredibly unfortunate, and could’ve been a big setback to the team given his importance.

While Mousinho’s side still gained promotion without him, it’s clear that he’s still considered one of the team’s top stars.

He has jumped straight back into the starting lineup in the Championship since recovering to full fitness, and keeping someone of his quality should be their aim going into 2025.
