It was a special night of Celtic celebrations at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro on Sunday as the club held their 20th annual Player of the Year Awards, supported by Call Robert.

The special event, with 12,000 supporters gathered to celebrate the successes of this season, came just 24 hours after Brendan Rodgers’ side had won another Glasgow derby to go six points clear at the top of the table with just two games remaining.

And it was held just hours after the Celtic FC Women’s team beat Partick Thistle 3-0 to remain top of the table on goal difference, also with just two games remaining.

The atmosphere was incredible, and there were plenty of awards handed out on the night to some of the current Celts, as well as a few former players, with a healthy sprinkling of Celtic legends in the audience.

The night was hosted by Shebahn Aherne and Des Clarke, while the musical entertainment came courtesy of Johnny Mac and Joe Gallagher, and also Kyle Falconer.

For the men’s team, Matt O’Riley enjoyed his own personal treble, winning the Young Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Player of the Year Awards.

And there was a poignant moment as the midfielder accepted the award voted for by his team-mates when he sang the praises of Joe Hart, saying that the Hoops goalkeeper deserved to win the Players’ Player Award.

Joe Hart was then invited up on stage in an impromptu and emotional moment to receive the well-deserved acclaim of the crowd for what he has done for the club.

For the women’s team, Amy Gallacher picked up the Players’ Player of the Year Award, while she was also the Top Goalscorer of the Season.

The Player of the Year Award was won by Caitlin Hayes for the second season in a row.

And in the Goal of the Season category, Tash Flint’s excellent strike against Rangers in a 1-1 draw at Ibrox was voted by supporters as the winner.

It was also a derby goal against Rangers which won the award for the men’s team, with Kyogo’s stunner in the win at Celtic Park back in December proving the most popular with fans.

This year’s Academy Player of the Year Award was won by Daniel Kelly after an impressive campaign which saw the 18-year-old midfielder make the breakthrough into Brendan Rodgers’ first-team and also score his first goal for the club, a stunning strike against Dundee.

There was also a moving moment when the Special Recognition Award was awarded, posthumously, to Celtic author and historian, David Potter.

His wife, Rosemary, accompanied by Celtic legend, Tom Boyd, accepted the award in honour of her husband.

As well as the various categories for the current men’s and women’s teams, there were also two special categories in recognition of the 20th anniversary of this occasion – the Legendary Goal of the Season and Legendary Player of the Season.

The Legendary Goal, as voted for by the Celtic fans, went to Shunsuke Nakamura for his stunning free-kick against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League back in November 2006.

And legendary Celtic captain, Scott Brown, was named Legendary Player of the Year, having won the Player of the Year Award twice during his 14 incredible years with the Hoops.

The roof almost came off the OVO Hydro when the Outstanding Contribution Award recipient was announced – the Magnificent Seven himself, Henrik Larsson.

The Super Swede, who scored 242 goals in 315 appearances for the Hoops over seven magnificent seasons, was visibly moved at the reception he received from the Celtic fans as he walked on to the stage.

It was in keeping with the whole night – a wonderful occasion that celebrated everything that is great about Celtic Football Club and where it was shown yet again that Glasgow really is green and white…
