Hansi Flick is planning a new role for Joshua Kimmich in the German national team. According to BILD, Flick is planning to give the Bayern Munich player an inverted full-back role, taking inspiration from Pep Guardiola and his use of John Stones.
Per the report, Flick showed players videos of Manchester City at the team’s Ritz-Carlton hotel, where he explained his new tactics and philosophy. Guardiola recently converted Stones from a defender to a ‘Six’ with the Englishman continuously switching positions during the game.
Right-back has been a problem area for Germany of late with Lukas Klostermann, Matthias Ginter, Thilo Kehrer, Marius Wolf and Benjamin Henrichs all playing that role at some point in Germany’s latest games. Playing Kimmich at right-back would allow the Bayern man to switch from playing in a back four to a midfield position, which utilises his strengths.
BILD also report that Flick tested the new tactic in a secret game against the U20s.
The upcoming games against Japan and France are crucial for Flick and Germany as they prepare for Euro 2024 as hosting nation.
