The need for Manchester City to sign a full-back or two is well-known. Alongside the midfield, it is one of the biggest areas for Hugo Viana and company to address this summer. A new report from Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Andrea Cambiaso remains a target for Pep Guardiola’s side. But Romano has also reported that Tottenham Hotspur full-back Destiny Udogie is a player who has also caught Manchester City’s eye.
Fabrizio Romano has reported for GIVEMESPORT that Manchester City are set to continue their hunt for a full-back this summer. Romano further reports that Kyle Walker is not a part of Manchester City’s plans going forward. The England international is currently on loan at AC Milan and his future lies away from the Etihad. Furthermore, Romano reports that Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso remains a summer target for the world champions. But Romano also reports that Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie has emerged as a player City could move for this summer. Fabrizio Romano goes on to report that Udogie is highly rated at Manchester City. Lastly, Romano adds that Manchester City’s incoming director of football, Hugo Viana, has followed Udogie as a player since he was at Udinese.
If Manchester City want to add a full-back with pace and power to their ranks Destiny Udogie is that type of player. The Italian full-back typically plays at left-back for Ange Postecoglou’s side. But he is a versatile player who can play at either full-back position. But what stands out in Udogie’s game is his pace and power. He storms down the pitch and is an asset to Tottenham’s play both going forward and defensively. But pace and power aren’t the only strong attributes in the Italian full-back’s game.
Destiny Udogie is good on the ball which stands out in his play. Given that Ange Postecoglou’s side plays a possession-based game, Udogie has shown this side of his game. He can pick out a pass and can play a quality ball in the final third. Defensively he is sound. His pace helps him get up and down the pitch, and he is often forced to track back defensively at a rate of knots, given the high defensive line Postecoglou employs. That attribute would see him suited to a role in Pep Guardiola’s side. If Manchester City want an athletic full-back Udogie is that type of player.
The question mark with any player Manchester City could want to sign from Spurs is the price. It is included in Fabrizio Romano’s report that Tottenham consider Udogie to be untouchable. But money talks, and if City were to move for Destiny Udogie, it would likely take a sizable transfer fee for Daniel Levy to part ways with the Italian full-back. It’s not an impossible deal for Manchester City to pull off but it would likely prove to be costly based on Tottenham’s reputation when it comes to selling players.
If Manchester City want to sign an athletic full-back who is blessed with good technical ability Destiny Udogie could be that player. If City can’t land Andrea Cambiaso perhaps they could move for Udogie. He’d add a different set of skills to Manchester City’s squad but signing him from Spurs could be difficult. But he ticks the boxes required from a potential City signing so it’s no surprise to see Manchester City have an interest in the powerful full-back.
