A Moment in A Time: The Lisbon Lions take their final bow

It is, of course, part of Celtic legend that Jock Stein gave the Lions Lions one last hurrah at the end of the 1970/71 season when it was known that Bertie Auld would be leaving the club after the final league game.

Clyde were the opposition on May 1, 1971 as the club celebrated winning the six-in-a-row title and marked the occasion rather appropriately with six goals – all scored by Lions.

Celtic's legendary manager had announced that the Lions would take their final bow, although the injured 40-year-old Ronnie Simpson could only take part in the warm-up with his Lisbon team-mates. And it was Ronnie who led the team out at a Celtic Park, which was undergoing building work at that time.

Supporters all knew it would be Bertie’s last game and could guess that Ronnie wouldn’t return, but John Clark and Stevie Chalmers also left that summer, both departing for Morton, so this really was it for the Lisbon Lions.

There had been times over recent years when the Celtic keepers had less than little to do – this time ‘Faither’ really could enjoy the pipe and the slippers for this game as Evan Williams took over in goal as the fans were treated to a Bobby Lennox hat-trick, a Willie Wallace goal and the last ever Lions’ goal was suitably scored by Stevie Chalmers – the man who netted the strike that christened the Lisbon Lions.
