Adam Idah is nearing a move to Celtic following an agreement with Norwich City

Ally McCoist has claimed Celtic are overpaying to sign a good player in Adam Idah after an agreement was reached with Norwich City but predicted the striker will do well after he re-joins the Scottish club.

According to Sky Sports, the Glasgow outfit have agreed terms with the Canaries on a deal worth £9.5 million.

Celtic are set to pay an initial £8.5 million, with a further £1 million in add-ons also included in the move.

Idah spent the second half of last season on loan with the Premiership champions, helping them secure a domestic league and cup double.

He bagged eight goals from 15 league appearances and is now set to make the permanent switch to Parkhead after a protracted negotiating process (all stats from Fbref).

McCoist believes that Celtic have paid slightly over the odds to sign the Irishman from Norwich, despite his impressive spell on loan last year.

However, the ex-Rangers boss has claimed that Idah could prove worth that kind of fee if he can start contributing goals in the Champions League, as well as helping the Bhoys to win the title.

“I think it is a good signing,” said McCoist, via Talksport.

“I think it is a good signing, I do. He scores goals.

“It is a lot of money, it is a lot of money, but at the same time, they could recoup it if he scores goals and he wins you the league and he gets you back into Champions League football.

“That’s the way you have got to look at it.

“I would say maybe slightly overpaid, but good player and I think he will do well.”

Idah broke into the Norwich first team squad as a teenager, featuring 12 times in the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign.

However, he was unable to ever really cement himself as a regular starter for the side.

It now looks like the substitute appearance against Oxford United last weekend will be the final time we see Idah in a Norwich shirt.

Norwich’s 2024 summer transfer activity

Idah is not the first major sale at Carrow Road this summer, with Gabriel Sara also departing, joining Galatasaray in a deal worth €18 (£15.3) million, according to the BBC.

There has been a lot of speculation over the future of Jonathan Rowe as well, with Leeds United and Marseille both being mentioned as potential destinations, reports Football Insider and Sky Sports.

But the Canaries have also made signings of their own this summer, bringing in the likes of Amankwah Forson, José Córdoba, Ben Chrisene, and Callum Doyle into Johannes Hoff Thorup’s squad.

Idah deal is great business by Norwich

Idah has been unable to really prove himself as a regular starter for Norwich over the years, falling behind Josh Sargent in the pecking order.

Given that was unlikely to change this season, cashing in on him now for an initial fee worth £8.5 million is good business.

That money can now be reinvested back into improving the side, with the club eyeing a push for promotion this year.
