A-League round up: Perth go top, Wellington continue their form

Another weekend of exciting A-League fixtures brought the noise as Perth Glory took the top spot after a win over Canberra United.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory earned their first win of the season, while Wellington Phoenix continued their winning run. Here’s a closer look at how the latest round of results unfolded in Australia.

Wellington 2-1 Brisbane Roar

In a narrow 2-1 victory, Wellington took all three points from Brisbane Roar. Mariana Speckmaier got the goal-scoring action underway six minutes in as the forward nodded home a well-worked free kick. The second goal of the game didn’t come until the 84th minute though, with the tie relatively level throughout.

Annalie Longo doubled Wellington’s advantage as the No.16 capitalised on a sloppy pass to fire home a stunning strike from 12 yards out. Mia Corbin snatched a late injury-time goal for the visitors. although the No.9’s effort would prove merely a consolation. Blasting the ball from the edge of the area, the forward whipped the ball home from the edge of the area to reduce the deficit.

Canberra United 2-3 Perth Glory

In a five-goal thriller, Perth Glory took all three points from their latest A-League win over Canberra United. An early goal from Natasha Rigby saw the No.4 head the ball home at the far post from a well-worked corner.

Just minutes later Cannon Clough restored the deadlock. The 27-year-old got her head to the ball, nodding her effort beyond Morgan Aquino’s reach.

Grace Jale’s 39th-minute effort was quickly nullified as Vesna Milivojevic converted her spot kick for the hosts just six minutes later. Sofia Sakalis’ 51st-minute penalty would ultimately be enough to take all three points for the visitors.

Melbourne Victory 2-0 Adelaide

Melbourne Victory got their first win of the season thanks to a 2-0 triumph against Adelaide United at AAMI Park. Victory thought they’d taken the lead with just 11 minutes played, but McKenzie Weinert’s header was ruled out for a foul on Adelaide keeper Annalee Grove.

The hosts took the lead just after the half hour mark, when Weinert latched onto Rachel Lowe’s lofted pass to stab the ball home past Grove. Kayla Morrison made sure of the points just six minutes later as she headed home Alana Murphy’s free-kick.

Western United 2-2 Melbourne City

In the fourth game of the weekend, Western United held Melbourne City to a 2-2 draw. Hannah Keane’s early goal for the hosts would be the only thing to separate the two teams going into the break. An equaliser from Holly McNamara was quickly followed by Hannah Wilkinson’s effort to put the visitors into the lead. Kahli Johnson’s 86th-minute leveller was enough to snatch Western a point whilst ending City’s winning run.

Newcastle Jets 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers

Western Sydney Wanderers were denied a first win of the season as a blockbusting strike from Jets captain Cassidy Davis earned the hosts a point in the Hunter. It took until the 64th minute for the home side to register a shot on target when Melindaj Barbieri stung the palms of Wanderers goalkeeper Shamiran Khamis.

Western Sydney took the lead with a little over ten minutes left to play when Vicky Bruce headed home Amy Harrison’s long-range free kick. However, deep into added time, Davis’ stunning first-time volley ensured the points were shared.
