A-League: Adelaide fail to take home advantage, Sydney FC fall short | OneFootball

Sydney FC faltered in their attempt to retain their title as Brisbane sealed the three points. Central Coast Mariners fired ahead after a 2-1 victory away to Adelaide, their first home A-League win of the season.

Adelaide United 1-2 Central Coast Mariners

Central Coast Mariners got their first victory since re-forming courtesy of a 2-1 triumph away to Adelaide United on Friday night. The hosts nearly took the lead on 13 minutes, however, Dylan Holmes was denied at point-blank range by Courtney Newbon. The Mariners took the lead just before halftime as Taren King fired the ball home from less than a yard out.

Ten minutes after halftime, the home side doubled their lead as Isabel Gomez swept in a cross which Chinese international Wurigumula turned home from close range. Adelaide reduced the deficit in the 67th minute when Ella Tonkin converted Sarah Morgan’s cross following a well-worked corner routine.

The Reds couldn’t find an equaliser as the Mariners held on for a historic first A-League Women’s win since 2009.

Melbourne City 2-1 Canberra United

Melbourne claimed their second league victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Canberra United. Rhianna Pollicina got both goals for the hosts. The No.10 got the goal-scoring action underway, giving City the lead in the 26th minute. The Australian bagged her brace just twenty minutes later as she converted her spot-kick putting the home side comfortably ahead shortly after the break.

Michelle Heyman pulled a consolation goal back for the visitors in the 63rd minute. Despite having seven shots throughout the game, Canberra failed to take anything from the tie. The defeat sees the visitors finish the weekend tenth in the table whilst Melbourne occupy joint second.

Brisbane Roar 1-0 Sydney FC

In a narrow 1-0 victory, Brisbane Roar took all three points from Sydney FC. A first-half goal from Chelsea Blissett put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute. The Australian bagged her first A-League goal as she curled the ball into the top corner beyond Jada Whyman. Despite enjoying more possession and managing more attempts on goal, the visitors could not find an equaliser.

Ultimately the goal would be enough to secure the win for the hosts, seeing them finish the weekend second in the table. Sydney finished the weekend occupying fifth position, taking three points from their opening two games.

A-League: Western United 2-1 Melbourne Victory

A late winner gave Western United their first 3 points of the season as they came behind to beatMelbourne Victory. The visitors took the lead after just 16 minutes when Emma Checker cleverly headed home from 6 yards out.

Western squared things in the 65th minute as Melissa Taranto got her head onto a corner fromher twin sister Adriana. The hosts snatched the win in the dying moments when Victory keeper Lydia Williams was unable to deal with Hannah Keane’s strike from distance. Keiwa Hieda smashed home the loose ball to take all three points for her side.

Perth Glory 1-0 Newcastle Jets

In the fifth of the weekend’s games, Perth Glory took all three points from their meeting with Newcastle Jets. After a quiet first half, the hosts took the lead in the 50th minute through Susan Phonsongkham. The Australian capitalised on a strong solo effort from teammate Millie Farrow to fire the ball home from the edge of the area.

Newcastle enjoyed significantly more shots than their opposition however a lack of clinical edge in front of goal saw their attacks fail to hit the mark. Perth finished the weekend sitting top of the A-League maintaining their unblemished league record. The visitors sit joint sixth in the table alongside the Central Coast Mariners.

A-League: Western Sydney Wanderers 0-3 Wellington Phoenix

Wellington Phoenix put the boot into Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday with a comprehensive 3-0 win at the CommBank Stadium. Macey Fraser almost gave the visitors the lead just before half-time with a stunner from 25 yards out that just clipped the crossbar.

With 67 minutes played, Wellington took the lead as Mariana Speckmaier headed home a corner from close range. With just eight minutes left, the visitors got their second thanks to a long-range effort from Fraser after the hosts squandered possession. The Nix made sure of the points in the 86th minute when Manaia Elliot pounced on some hesitant defending to slot the ball home for Wellington’s third of the afternoon.
