“A laboured victory”

Dino Toppmöller, Ansgar Knauff and Hugo Larsson admitted it “wasn’t a good performance” but was “a deserved win.”

Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “You’d categorise that as a classic laboured victory. We didn’t get into the game well at all, we were too sluggish in our passing and our intensity wasn’t at the level we wanted. Then it’s not so easy against these opponents. We addressed these things at the break, I got loud in the dressing room. We changed to a 4-3-3. We still didn’t set the world alight but we did have a different energy and intensity on the pitch in the second half. It wasn’t a good performance by us but we won. “I’d like to thank the fans for their fantastic support. They had a good feel for the situation and kept pushing us, even though we didn’t play well.”

Ansgar Knauff: “It wasn’t easy. We didn’t get into the game well but we deserved to get the three points. It wasn’t a good performance but we got the win. In the last European home game we only ended up with a point – this time it’s three. We know it wasn’t our best performance and we have room for improvement. We’ll analyse that and go again on Sunday.”

Hugo Larsson: “It was fun to play here. European matches always have a special atmosphere here in Frankfurt. We were the better team throughout. We did better after the break, created chances and deservedly won.”
