According to The Telegraph, the Canaries are weighing up a potential approach for the former Nottingham Forest boss.

Cooper guided the Reds to promotion to the Premier League in 2022, but was dismissed from his position at the City Ground in late 2023.

David Wagner was sacked by Norwich last week following the team’s 4-0 loss to Leeds United in the play-off semi-finals.

This has led to speculation over his replacement, with Cooper now among the names reportedly being considered.

Carlton Palmer has praised the work Cooper achieved during his time with Nottingham Forest, helping them make a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

He believes that his appointment would be a real coup for Norwich if they can get it over the line.

“I’m a big admirer of Steve Cooper, he did a fantastic job at Nottingham Forest and was unlucky to lose his job with the situations that were going on at the club, a lot of it was out of his control,” Palmer told Football League World.

“Forest stayed up under their new manager, Nuno, but I believe they would’ve done so under Steve Cooper as well.

“Yes, I’m a big admirer of Steve Cooper.

“I’m sure Norwich will be interested in bringing him to the football club, and Steve will be weighing up his options.

“I’m sure he’s itching to get back into the game.

“He would be a good fit at Carrow Road, I really do think he’d be a good fit.

“He likes to play attractive football, he likes to attack, he likes to get on the front-foot and that’s how the Norwich supporters like to see their team play.

“I think this would be a fantastic move for Norwich City, should they be able to get this one across the line.”

Steve Cooper's Championship experience

Cooper also previously worked with Swansea City, guiding them to a play-off final that they lost to Brentford.

The 44-year-old has earned a positive reputation within the game for his tactical acumen and work with youngsters.

Cooper also managed the England U16 and 17 sides, and oversaw the U17s World Cup win in 2017, with a squad that included multiple future senior internationals.

He is currently out of work since December, having been sacked by Nottingham Forest, but it remains to be seen whether he would accept a return to football with the Canaries.

Cooper would be a strong appointment by Norwich

Cooper has a great track record in the Championship, leading two clubs to a play-off final, winning one and losing the other.

With the proper backing, he could have Norwich competing for a place back in the Premier League quite quickly.

His experience in the top flight should have only made him a smarter manager too, so that experience will also be quite useful to have in the dugout.

It would be a great sign of ambition from Norwich to appoint Cooper, but it remains to be seen if he can be convinced to take on the role right now.
