"A good bet for him" - Pundit tips Sheffield Wednesday over QPR and Millwall for Rotherham star

Rotherham United could be set to lose one of their most valuable assets.

Centre-back, Cameron Humphreys, was one of Rotherham's better performers in a rather poor campaign last season as the club suffered relegation from the Championship. Steve Evans returned to South Yorkshire at the end of the season and now prepares for a huge season in League One.

The Millers have already secured a number of fresh signings, with the likes of Sean Raggett, Jonson Clarke-Harris and Liam Kelly linking up with the squad ahead of pre-season.

On the other hand, Rotherham will be hoping to keep a hold of some of their best performers from last season, and fend off any interest from elsewhere. Cameron Humphreys comes under this category as he is currently attracting interest from the division above.

According to a report from Football Insider, Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall, QPR and Swansea are all targeting Humphreys ahead of a summer move.

This leaves Rotherham and Steve Evans with a big dilemma, as his contract expires next summer, so they may wish to cash in now.

Rotherham should look to cash in

The Millers will, of course, want to keep a hold of Humphreys for next season, but in the bigger picture, selling him this summer may be the sensible decision.

Former England international and current pundit, Carlton Palmer, spoke exclusively to Football League World on what Rotherham and Humphreys should do this summer.

"He's a very good defender at Championship level", said Palmer. "With Rotherham now relegated to League One, Steve Evans would like to keep the player, I'm sure, but with his contract running out... if the right offer comes in, Rotherham would let the player go.

"They won't want to lose him, he's a very, very good defender and Steve Evans would be looking and plotting to get promotion at the first attempt back to the Championship with Rotherham, so you want to keep your better players.

"As Rotherham have done in the past, if the right offer comes along, they will let the player go. You've already seen they have sold Viktor Johansson to Stoke City, so they will sell at the right price."

Palmer suggests the best fit for Humphreys

With four Championship clubs eyeing a potential summer move, Humphreys is left with a big choice to make in terms of the next steps in his career. Carlton Palmer suggested that Sheffield Wednesday would be Humphreys' best option.

"Which would be the best fit for the player? Well, Sheffield Wednesday is just down the road. QPR, Millwall and Swansea are all teams you're going to have to travel to.

"Danny Rohl had done a fantastic job, so did Cifuentes at QPR. Millwall and Swansea have still got some work to do next season, but Sheffield Wednesday and QPR will be looking to push into the top half of the table.

"I would say Sheffield Wednesday would be a good bet for him, and Sheffield Wednesday need a really good centre-back who can play week in and week out.

"As I said, it's a short move down the road, and it would be great business for Sheffield Wednesday if they can get him in at the right money."
