As Manchester City continue their bid on the pitch tonight against Aston Villa to qualify for next season’s Champions League, the club’s hierarchy is busy planning for a busy summer. There will be players who leave the club as part of City’s rebuild. Those departures will cater for the arrival of players to strengthen a host of positions in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
One position that needs to be strengthened in the City squad is right-back. Now a new report indicates that Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro could be available this summer. If that proves to be the case, could City move for a player who once was a part of the club? There’s merit to the idea, although City’s persistent links to Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong and the form of Matheus Nunes do cloud the equation.
Lucas Arnold has relayed a report from Graeme Bailey for TBR Football that Tottenham could sell Pedro Porro this summer. Furthermore, the TBR Football report indicates that Tottenham could sell Porro for over £50 million. It is also reported by TBR Football that Djed Spence’s rise may see Spurs cash in on Porro. Lastly, it is further reported by TBR Football that Manchester City have kept tabs on Porro’s performances for some time.
Pedro Porro, as a player, is an attacking right-back who could fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad. Manchester City’s need to sign a right-back is obvious. Basically, he’d be an improvement on what Matheus Nunes brings to the role for Pep Guardiola’s side. Although, is it £50 million worth of improvement? That’s one question. Porro is an attacking weapon although he can be suspect defensively at times. There is also the factor of negotiating with Tottenham from a Manchester City point of view that has to be considered. Taking all of those factors into consideration, while Manchester City may admire Porro as a player it’s hard to see them spending big on a player who doesn’t improve a great deal on what they already have. Although nothing is impossible, it’s just not a move that makes a lot of sense at this moment in time.
Perhaps Manchester City could move for Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen instead. Fraser Fletcher has previously reported for TeamTalk that Bayer Leverkusen would accept offers of around £40 million for Frimpong. That’s a cheaper alternative to Pedro Porro, and it’s arguable who is the better player between Porro and Frimpong. Matheus Nunes looks like he could be an option as a squad player at right-back so perhaps City will move for Frimpong or Porro. Rico Lewis appears better suited to moving into midfield in the near future.
So if it’s a move for either Pedro Porro or Jeremie Frimpong, my bet would be on Manchester City moving for Frimpong. He’d be cheaper, offer the same type of weapons to Pep Guardiola’s squad as Porro, and Manchester City wouldn’t have to negotiate with Tottenham. That’s how the situation could play out based on TBR Football’s new report and Fraser Fletcher’s previous report for TeamTalk.
It seems that City will sign a right-back this summer but who that is remains to be seen. While Pedro Porro could be available based on the TBR Football report it’s just hard to see Manchester City moving for him, although that could change come the summer.
