Finding bargains in the modern-day transfer market is no easy task. Especially when the club seeking to buy a player is Manchester City. Generally, selling teams will demand top dollar to sell a player to City. Or in other cases, teams will slap a high price tag on an asset to ward off interest from other clubs. Pete O’Rourke has reported for Football Insider has reported that Newcastle United have slapped an £80 million price tag on Tino Livramento. It wouldn’t appear likely that Manchester City will pay Newcastle’s asking price to solve their right-back issue.
But a deal that is too good to pass up may have caught Manchester City’s eye. Steve Kay has reported for Football Transfers that Manchester City are eager to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries. If Manchester City can sign the Dutch international, they will solve the right-back issue for next season, and Pep Guardiola’s squad will undoubtedly be stronger for the 25/26 season.
Steve Kay reports that Manchester City believe that the €25 million release clause in Denzel Dumfries’ contract is too good to pass up. Furthermore, Kay reports that Manchester City have initiated transfer talks with Inter Milan over a potential deal to bring Dumfries to the Etihad. Kay also reports that the €25 million release clause in Dumfries’ contract expires on July 15. Lastly, Kay reports that Manchester City are in the process of exploring whether or not Denzel Dumfries would be interested in a move to Manchester City this summer.
It is hard to see Manchester City finding a better value right-back than Denzel Dumfries. The €25 million release clause represents great value. Especially for a player who is a proven commodity at the highest level. Dumfries would instantly become Manchester City’s first-choice right-back if he did sign for Pep Guardiola’s side. That’s not a knock on Rico Lewis or Matheus Nunes but that’s just the reality of the situation.
But to facilitate the signing of Denzel Dumfries, Manchester City will have to offload players this summer. Especially foreign players. That could potentially mean that players like Matheus Nunes or Manuel Akanji could be up for sale to make room in Manchester City’s defence for Dumfries. Jack Gaughan has reported for the Daily Mail that, as it stands, City need to offload four foreign players to avoid Pep Guardiola having to leave anybody out of the club’s 25-man Champions League squad. That is the juggling act in front of Hugo Viana and Txiki Begiristain. Signing Denzel Dumfries would further exacerbate this issue.
But as Steve Kay reports, signing Dumfries for €25 million could be a deal that is too good to pass up. Perhaps Manchester City will move for Dumfries then focus on departures. As if Manchester City could sign Dumfries, it would solve their right-back issue and make Pep Guardiola’s squad complete with a proven and quality right-back for the 25/26 season.
