A current LA Galaxy star could be selected tomorrow in Expansion Draft

The Los Angeles Galaxy will have another in-state foe next year as the latest expansion team will join Major League Soccer in 2025. As San Diego FC enters the league, the Expansion Draft is just hours away.

On Wednesday, the selections will take place at 7:30 PT and 10:30 ET. Taking a member from the LA Galaxy would be wise for a new team as they instantly gain championship experience. San Diego FC may look at the available roster options on Columbus Crew and LAFC, the two previous MLS Cup champions.

While many of the names are not a surprise, there are a few appealing players out of the eleven listed. Let's take a look at the list as this would be the first departure for the Los Angeles Galaxy from the 2024 Championship team.

Nearly half of the list of players are from the LA Galaxy's midfield. The team added Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund (Germany) in late July. However, Riqui Puig is not expected to play in 2025 since tearing his left ACL in the MLS Western Conference Finals against the Seattle Sounders FC.

The MLS Cup MVP this year was Gaston Brugman. His name is not protected like Reus or Puig. The veteran midfielder had the opening assist to teammate Joseph Paintsil for the first score of the 2024 MLS Cup Finals.

Also on the list is the captain, defender Maya Yoshida. The Japan-native is on the wrong side of 35 but has shown he can still play.

Brugman or Yoshida are the two flashiest names on the list. Another pair of intriguing names are Miguel Berry and Diego Fagundez.

Berry started six games for the Galaxy and came off the bench in 25 others. He recorded two goals and three assists this season. The Spanish forward would be a great veteran presence in the locker room for San Diego FC.

As would Fagundez. He played in all 34 games for the Los Angeles Galaxy as he was a member of the Starting XI in 19 of them.

Just like Brugman, Fagundez is also from Uruguay. He tallied four goals and three assists in 2024.

The nephew of Head Coach Greg Vanney is one of the eleven players listed, too. Defender Eriq Zavaleta has won two MLS Cups now with his uncle as the head coach. The tandem did so together in 2017 when with Toronto FC.

Another defender, Martin Caceres, joins the unprotected list. Also from Uruguay, the 37-year-old did not take the field since August 4 when the LA Galaxy defeated Guadalajara in the Leagues Cup.

It is unlikely that the Los Angeles Galaxy will lose one of the other names (Aaron, Bibout, Tucker Lepley, Gino Vivi, Brady Scott or Isaiah Parente) on Wednesday. It is more likely that San Diego FC will take Brugman, Berry, or Fagundez.

If San Diego wants to go off of merit, Brugman is a viable selection. Both Fagundez and Berry are under 30 but Yoshida could provide the leadership that the Galaxy just may not need anymore after their sixth MLS Cup title in franchise history.
