Rangers fans have made it very, very clear to Philippe Clement in the most overwhelming poll we’ve ever seen on Ibrox Noise, as the fans took to voting on the defence for this weekend v St Mirren.

Following the best defensive performance against Hearts from Rangers that we’ve witnessed for many weeks, supporters were abundantly definitive, with a 2000+ votes and counting as we speak taking to hammering home one choice.

96% want to see Leon Balogun and John Souttar continue at the rear, while a tiny 4% wanted Balogun and Goldson.

Literally 0% wanted to see Goldson and Souttar paired again, with just 86 votes of the 2000 aiming for that combination.

There have been some notes made about Souttar’s display at Hampden at the weekend, and we’re going to decompress those notions in a later entry, but for now the numbers don’t lie.

Rangers fans, clearly, want Balogun and Souttar to continue – in 16 matches this season, Balogun has conceded 6 goals. 15 starts. And we just don’t include the 3-3 among those 16 because he came on with about 1 minute left.

The Balogun Souttar duo is by a distance the best Rangers have, and Rangers simply concede less when the Nigerian plays.

It’s on Philippe Clement for rigidly sticking with Connor Goldson despite how many matches Rangers were drawing or losing, despite how many goals we’d started shipping. This is the simple reason why Rangers’ season crashed so quickly recently – Goldson, being carried by both Balogun and Souttar, eventually became too much of a weight and everything floundered.

And still Clement didn’t act till it was maybe too late. We really hope it isn’t. We have definitely lost the advantage we had, and even beating Celtic at Parkhead doesn’t bring it back if they win their other 4 matches.

Rangers can only win 56 now if we beat them on their patch and they draw at least one other match. And we win all our split matches. Which no Old Firm side has ever done.

In truth, both sides WILL drop points from here on in, but it’s definitely advantage Celtic for now.

We hope it doesn’t remain that way. And Goldson and Souttar is a good way to help.
