The 2023/24 Barclays Women's Super League ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday as Chelsea clinched the title ahead of Manchester City on the final day by thrashing Manchester United 6-0 at Old Trafford.

It was a season defined by twists and turns, underlined by the most gripping title race of recent years. Elsewhere, Liverpool secured their first top four finish since 2017, while Bristol City's stay in the top flight was only fleeting.

The final day was also full of heartfelt goodbyes as Emma Hayes and Carla Ward bid farewell to their respective clubs. It has been an unforgettable campaign with some incredible individual and team performances.

Here is 90min's WSL team of the season...

GK: Khiara Keating

19-year-old Khiara Keating truly announced herself to the world by securing the WSL Golden Glove with Manchester City. They conceded just 15 times in 22 league games, posting the best defensive record in the league.

Keating was integral to that and she also received her first senior England call-up back in October. A star for the present and for the future.

RB: Ashley Lawrence

It's no surprise both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were vying for Ashley Lawrence's signature last summer when she left Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The defender has played a key role in Chelsea's title-winning season and even popped up with a goal in the away victory over Aston Villa in November.

Her quality and versatility was on display across the campaign and she adapted to a new league seamlessly.

CB: Alex Greenwood

Alex Greenwood carried her exceptional 2023 World Cup form into the WSL season and has led by example at the back. Without a doubt, the 30-year-old is one of Gareth Taylor's first names on the team sheet.

The partner alongside her has chopped and changed across the campaign, as well as in games, but Greenwood has been an ever-present.

CB: Jess Carter

Jess Carter has become a leader for both club and country over the last 12 months and she is, unquestionably, one of the best defenders in the league.

The 26-year-old has continued to show her versatility playing in various formations and different positions for Chelsea. Whatever Hayes has needed, Carter has delivered.

LB: Niamh Charles

  2. Honourable mentions: Katie McCabe, Janice Cayman

Despite being just 24 years of age, Niamh Charles is a leader for Chelsea. She often shouldered the captaincy during Millie Bright's absence and led the team for some of their biggest games.

Two goals and seven assists in the league throughout 2023/24 is also impressive numbers for a defender.

CM: Erin Cuthbert

Erin Cuthbert arguably doesn't get the credit she deserves. She has been outstanding in midfield and scored decisive goals in defining moments.

Along with Charles, she stepped up as a real leader for Chelsea and has contributed massively to a fifth consecutive league title.

CM: Marie Hobinger

Liverpool's Marie Hobinger is a strong shout for signing of the season having been instrumental in the team's fourth placed finish. Five goals and six assists in 22 league games is solid numbers for the 22-year-old.

Superb finishes and assists galore. Hobinger has been a creative force for Liverpool, proving to be a masterstroke of a signing from Matt Beard.

CM: Jutta Rantala

Another signing of the season shout is Leicester City's Jutta Rantala. After a relegation threatened campaign last term, the Foxes looked extremely bright in the early months of the season and Rantala's arrival was certainly one of the things that sparked their good form.

The 24-year-old scored six goals and registered five assists in her 22 WSL appearances, and her performances earned a much-deserved Player of the Season nomination.

RW: Lauren James

The closest challenger to Khadija Shaw in the Golden Boot chase was Chelsea's Lauren James. When Hayes' side have been struck with long-term injuries to key players, the 22-year-old has been the one to step up and produce moments of magic when needed.

To put it simply, she is absolutely unplayable at times. She's also displayed her versatility when Hayes has needed to deploy her in different positions across the forward line.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2023/24 Golden Boot winner. With 21 goals in the league, nobody has come close to leapfrogging Khadija Shaw in the standings.

It speaks volumes that her absence in the final weeks of the campaign might have been the difference between City winning the league title and missing out to Chelsea. As the London club celebrate their glory, Taylor can only wonder 'what if' his star forward had been fit and firing.

Nobody has assisted more goals in the WSL during 2023/24 than City's Lauren Hemp. With 11 goals also to her name, the England star has been at the centre of the Cityzen's title charge.

Still only 23, Hemp is one of the league's best and brightest. The club will be delighted with the fact she signed a new contract until 2027 at the end of last month.
