Reading are set to be in for an interesting summer ahead, with the Royals preparing for another season in the Championship.

The Berkshire-based side had been in with a real chance of winning a timely promotion back into the Premier League under the management of Veljko Paunovic.

Reading occupied a spot in the top-six for the majority of this year’s league campaign, with the Royals previously making an impressive start to the 2020/21 season.

But a poor run of results in the second-half of the season saw them drop out of the play-off positions at an important stage of this year’s campaign.

There are a number of players that are out-of-contract heading into the summer, whist other members of Paunovic’s team are likely to attract transfer interest after some strong displays this season.

The Reading boss is likely to be wanting to add to his squad as well, although it remains to be seen as to whether they’ll have any funds available ahead of the 2021/2022 season.

We take a look at NINE transfer developments we could see emerge at Reading this summer.

Find out what the first one is, on the next page….

Michael Olise has been the standout player for Reading in the 2020/21 season, but it remains to be seen as to how much longer he’ll be their player.

The midfielder was named as the EFL’s Young Player of the Season recently, with Olise chipping in with six goals and 11 assists in all competitions this term.

He has previously been attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Leeds United, although it remains to be seen as to which club is leading the race to land his signature.

Olise has one year remaining on his current contract at the Madejski Stadium, and you would imagine that the Royals will be wanting as much as they can get for their promising talent.

McIntyre is heading into the final few months of his contract with Reading, and Paunovic has previously confirmed that he’s in talks with the club over a new deal.

McIntyre has been impressive in his last couple of seasons with the Berkshire-based side, and the majority of the Madejski Stadium faithful will be hoping that he can extend his stay with the Royals.

The defender has missed their last few games through injury, and isn’t expected to return to the side before the end of this year’s campaign.

But at the age of 22, he could be an important member of the Reading team moving forwards into future seasons.

Mo Besic is entering the final few months of his contract with Premier League side Everton, and has emerged as a potential target for Reading according to The Telegraph.

The midfielder has found game time hard to come by with the Toffees in recent seasons, and has had a loan spell in the Championship with Middlesbrough not so long ago.

Reading could certainly benefit from adding depth and experience to their squad ahead of the 2021/22 season, and Besic would provide them with that.

It remains to be seen as to whether the Berkshire-based side will reignite their interest in signing the midfielder heading into the summer though.

Reading were linked with a move for Sporting CP youngster Bruno Tavares back in December 2020, although a move failed to materialise in the January transfer window.

Tavares is still only 19, and had could benefit from a loan spell to further his development in senior football.

Reading could be a move that temps Tavares as well, with the Royals needing additional depth in wide areas, with Yakou Meite and Ovie Ejaria being their first-choice wingers at this moment in time.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Veljko Paunovic dip into the loan market in the summer, with finances likely to be tight due to Financial Fair Play regulations.

Southwood has found regular minutes with Reading’s first-team hard to come by in recent seasons, with Rafael occupying the starting spot for the majority of this year’s campaign.

Southwood has been restricted to just three appearances for the Reading senior side this term, and with the shot-stopper being out-of-contract in the summer, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see him having one eye on a move elsewhere.

The 23-year-old has previously been out on loan with the likes of Eastleigh and Hamilton Academical, where he has caught the eye with some strong performances away from the Madejski Stadium.

Michael Morrison has been an important member of the Reading team in the 2020/21 season, with the former Birmingham City defender making 36 appearances in all competitions this term.

The 33-year-old’s experience has been missed in the final few games of this year’s campaign, with the Royals falling out of the play-off positions at a crucial stage of the season.

Morrison is out-of-contract in the summer, and it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll have his deal extended heading towards the 2021/22 campaign.

With Tom McIntyre also out-of-contract, Reading will have an important decision to make on Morrison’s future in the next couple of months.

Journalist Alan Nixon has previously revealed that Reading were one of the teams interested in signing Swindon Town’s Scott Twine.

Twine has been a rare bright spark for the Robins this season, as they were relegated back into League Two after a brief spell in the third-tier.

He was on hand to score 12 goals and provide nine assists for his Swindon team-mates this season, and it appears as though those strong performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

Luton Town, QPR and Brentford are also believed to be interested in a deal to sign Twine, with the Swindon man likely to have a tough decision over which club to push for a move towards.

Both Sam Baldock and Sone Aluko are highly unlikely to be with Reading heading towards the 2021/22 campaign.

They’re both out-of-contract at the end of this year’s campaign, and it would come as a real surprise if they were to extend their deals beyond this season.

Baldock and Aluko arrived for sizeable transfer fees, but have struggled to make a notable impact at the Madejski Stadium, which has been frustrating for the club’s supporters.

Getting their wages off of the books will be pleasing to see for Reading, as they turn their attentions towards next year’s league campaign.

Richards has caught the eye with a number of impressive performances for Reading this season, and it appears as though that hasn’t gone unnoticed.

The left-back has made 41 appearances in all competitions this term, and has reportedly agreed terms with German giants Bayern Munich according to Sky Sports News.

It remains to be seen as to when this will be confirmed by both clubs, with Richards being out-of-contract at the end of the 2020/21 season.

With a pre-contract agreement being reached between Richards and Bayern Munich, Reading are likely to be frustrated at not getting a fee for his services.
