11 years ago today, Tottenham beat Wigan Athletic 9-1 to record their biggest ever Premier League win

Tottenham Hotspur beat Wigan Athletic 9-1 on November 22, 2009 to record their biggest ever win in the Premier League, a record which still stands.

When Wigan Athletic travelled to White Hart Line on 22nd November, 2009, no one could have predicted what was in store for them. The two sides travelled into the dressing room with Spurs leading 1-0 at half-time after a Peter Crouch header 9 minutes after kick-off.

Spurs dominated the match till then, but Wigan were still in the game with a scoreline of just 1-0. One can only wonder where Roberto Martinez, Wigan’s manager, went wrong with his half-time pep talk for Wigan to totally capitulate in the next 45 minutes.

After the break, Jermain Defoe scored the first of his five goals that game when he scored from a tight angle to put Spurs 2-0 ahead. The flurry of goals that followed was unprecedented.

Defoe scored again 3 minutes later to put the Lilywhites 3-0 up, but Paul Scharner’s goal for Wigan in the 57th minute meant that the Latics were back in the game. However, Defoe scored again a minute later to complete the then second-fastest Premier League hat-trick, behind only Liverpool’s Robbie Fowler.

Aaron Lennon deservingly got a goal for his outstanding display to make it 5-1 while Jermain Defoe buried two brilliant through-balls from the Croatian duo of Vedran Corluka and Niko Kranjcar. The game stood at 7-1 in the 87th minute, but that was still not the end of it.

David Bentley’s brilliant free-kick rebounded into the net off Chris Kirkland in the 88th minute, and the Wigan goalkeeper still had enough time to see Nico Kranjcar’s shot fly past him into the top corner deep into injury time to seal the 9-1 scoreline.

While the match-ball and the plaudits went Jermain Defoe’s way, Aaron Lennon’s performance was equally as good. The pacey English winger assisted thrice and scored one after he terrorized the flanks until the 79th minute when he was brought off to a standing ovation.

It was the first time that a team had scored 9 goals in the Premier League in 14 years. No other team would go on to put 9 past an opponent in the league until Leicester City did so in October 2019 away to Southampton, almost 10 years after Spurs’ result against Wigan.

The result saw Tottenham climb to 4th in the table, a position where they finished at the end of the season to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 48 years.
