€70m-rated reported Liverpool transfer target Nuno Mendes has revealed his intention to stay at Sporting Libson in a definitive statement regarding his future.

Mendes has confirmed that he is going to stay at Sporting and that he is not thinking about any other potential move at this moment in time, as he is living the dream in Portugal.

Earlier this year, Liverpool were linked with a potential swoop for Mendes at the end of the season. The report also claimed he has a €70m release clause.

Speaking to TVI24, as transcribed by HITC, “Right now I’m at Sporting and I’m staying at Sporting. I don’t think about anything else.

“We are all living a dream. Sporting hadn’t won the championship for 19 years. I was born in 2002 (the year of the club’s last league title) and it is very important to me.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

If the report about Mendes’ €70m release clause is accurate, Liverpool may not be too concerned by the defender’s decision. €70m is a huge amount of money for a player who could only be a back-up option to Andy Robertson for Liverpool. Robertson has started 34+ Premier League matches in each of the last three seasons at left-back for Liverpool and there has been no suggestion that the club are planning to replace him as the first-choice any time soon.

Therefore, this definitive statement from Mendes may not be one that Liverpool look at and start to panic over. Not least because they already have a back-up to Robertson in the current squad. Kostas Tsimikas joined Liverpool from Olympiacos last summer and has only played one match in the Premier League this season. Hopefully, the Greek international can get a solid pre-season in and show that he can be a reliable option for Jurgen Klopp, leaving no reason for the club to need Mendes.
