The Spanish national team put on a great display against Costa Rica in their opening match at the World Cup in Qatar. Spain dominated the game from start to finish and went ahead early on through Dani Olmo's goal in the 11th minute. Asensio, who was among the starting eleven, played his part in the win with a left-footed strike from inside the area in the 21st minute. Before the end of the first half, Ferrán Torres extended the lead. Four more goals came in the second half from Ferrán ('54), Gavi ('74), Soler ('90) and Morata ('92).

Asensio was replaced in the 69th minute, while Carvajal was not involved in this opening clash. Spain are top of Group E following the win. The Spaniards will look to hold on to top spot in their next two games against Rüdiger's Germany (Sunday 27, 8pm CET) and Japan (Thursday 1, 8pm).
