Manchester United’s move for Matthijs de Ligt is under threat after a huge number of fans signed a petition calling on Bayern bosses to keep the defender at the club. According to Sky Germany, approximately 60,000 Bayern Munich fans have signed the petition, expressing their desire to keep the Dutchman in Munich. The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks as head coach Erik ten Hag eyes a reunion with the former Ajax man.

The petition, created by Bayern supporters states that Matthijs de Ligt is a world class defender, ‘probably the best in our squad’ with a ‘promising future ahead of him’ and a ‘good mentality’. De Ligt featured just 22 times in the Bundesliga last season as injuries prevented him from playing, but when fully fit he clearly has a positive impact on the squad.

Bayern Munich finished third in the Bundesliga last season, their worst league finish since the 2010/11 campaign. Bayern fans will be hoping that the board will listen to their call and that the Dutch defender will help them lift trophies next season.
