Despite signing Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha this summer, Jules Kounde’s signing turned the most heads this summer for Barcelona. The Frenchman comes off three incredible seasons with Sevilla, and instantly elevates a crumbling backline.

However, the player is coming off an injury, and was left out of the squad to face Rayo Vallecano in the season opener. Barcelona were facing registration problems and thought this was the best way to deal with the problem as Kounde was not 100% fit.

The Catalan giants travel to San Sebastian on Sunday to lock horns against old foes, Real Sociedad. Kounde’s presence there could prove to be vital, but it seems Barça are still unsure whether they can register him.

To add fuel to the fire, Adria Soldevila reports on Que T’hi Jugues that Kounde is allowed to walk away for free if he is not registered by 31st August. Further, Barça will have to pay €2.5 million of the variables included in the player’s contract.

That said, the club are confident that they will be able to finalise this in time, especially with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Memphis Depay increasingly linked with an exit.

Barcelona are finalising Aubameyang’s move to Chelsea, who have found an agreement with the striker on personal terms. They are not, at the moment, willing to pay €30 million in transfer fees for him, though, which stands as a roadblock.

On the contrary, Memphis will leave the Catalan capital as a free agent, joining Juventus in the process. His lawyers are finalising the agreement to terminate his contract with Barcelona, and it could be completed before the Sociedad clash.

Andreas Christensen started alongside Eric Garcia vs Vallecano, but should Kounde be registered in time, Barcelona fans can finally see him start alongside Ronald Araujo.
