It’s crunch time across Europe and here are five games we can’t wait to tuck into this weekend.

Union Saint-Gilloise v Club Brugge

Spice rating: Mild 🌶

In terms of title showdowns, it doesn’t get much bigger than this in Belgium.

Just three points separate giants Club Brugge and surprise league leaders Saint-Gilloise, who could take a huge step towards the title with a win. Just three games remain after this weekend.

Saint-Gilloise have a rich history, with their tally of 11 Belgian league titles bettered only by Club Brugge (17) and Anderlecht (34) but they haven’t won one since 1935.

Their fortunes have changed under the ownership of Brighton owner Tony Bloom and it looks like that long awaited 12th title could be in the offing.

Feyenoord v PSV

Spice rating: Medium 🌶 🌶

Feyenoord and PSV have had a few good weeks between them.

The hosts reached the Europa Conference League final in midweek. The visitors beat Ajax to win the KNVB Cup in mid-April.

Now the side from Eindhoven are eyeing an even bigger coup, sitting just four points behind Ajax with three games to go this season.

A first league title since 2018 still seems unlikely but Roger Schmidt, set to leave this summer, would love nothing more than to steal Erik Ten Hag’s parting gift to the Ajax fans.

Atlético Madrid v Real Madrid

There will be no guard of honour for LaLiga champions Real Madrid as they cross town and visit the Wanda Metropolitano.

“Under no circumstances will Atlético de Madrid collaborate in this attempt at derision in which the true values of the sport are completely forgotten and tension and confrontation between fans are encouraged,” the club have said.

The fans don’t want a guard of honour to happen, so it won’t.

Madrid won’t mind, they’ve had a superb week regardless, but there will still be plenty of bite in this derby with the hosts only precariously occupying fourth place in the league.

Atleti will give everything to be in the Champions League again next season.

Benfica v Porto

Spice rating: Fire 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶

Winning the league is one thing, doing it at the home of your rivals’ is another.

Porto need just one point from their trip to Lisbon this weekend to regain the Portuguese title after it went to Sporting 12 months ago.

And you’d bet on them to finish the job on Saturday; the league leaders have lost just one of their 32 league matches this season.

Benfica have won none of their last eight against Porto and this fixture has seen four red cards in as many meetings in 2021. It could get tasty.

Schalke v St Pauli

Spice rating: Insane 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶

Two of Germany’s most well-supported clubs meet on Saturday with promotion to the Bundesliga on the line.

Schalke are on a superb run, with last week’s last second winner against SV Sandhausen making it six wins out of seven. That form has seen them rise to the very top of the league and a win this weekend could even see them secure promotion with a game to spare.

As for Sankt Pauli, a run of conceding late goals has meant too many dropped points. They topped the table when April began but ended the month in fifth.

This is a must-win for them in particular but neither side can afford dropped points if they want to be playing in the top flight next season.
