The football calendar has some more mouth-watering fixtures in store for us this weekend.
Here’s our guide to the spiciest matches outside of the Premier League.
It’s the international break in women’s football as countries start their European championship preparations. A handful of mini-tournaments are taking place across the globe but all eyes are on the Arnold Clark Cup featuring England, Canada, Spain and Germany.
As Euro 2022 hosts, England have a lot of pressure on their shoulders and Sarina Wiegman will be pushing them towards the final.
Spain, however, are one of the most improved sides on the world stage and feature plenty of names from the treble-winning Barcelona side including Jenni Hermoso, Aitana Bonmatí and Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas. As such, they are also tipped to reach the final.
Could this meeting at Carrow Road on Sunday be a preview of the final in July? We certainly think so.
While there is a significant gap in the table between second-place Borussia Dortmund (46 points) and thirteenth-place Borussia Mönchengladbach (26), this fiery clash in Germany is not a write-off.
It seemed as though the hosts were finding their groove again after closing the gap in the Bundesliga table but were recently embarrassed by Rangers in the Europa League.
The visitors, meanwhile, have also struggled this season and saw star man Denis Zakaria depart for Juventus in January. However, they remain unbeaten in two games suggesting they are finding their form at the right time to potentially inflict more misery on BVB.
Dortmund have a lot of questions to answer (more than simply figuring out how to replace the injured Erling Haaland). A positive performance on Sunday would help get them back on track but if manager Marco Rose loses against his former club – for the second time this season – he could be hot water.
It’s David against Goliath in Italy this weekend as Juventus welcome Torino for the Derby della Mole.
Massimiliano Allegri’s side is continuing their trek up the table in Serie A and sit unbeaten in six games.
The visitors, meanwhile, sit tenth in the table and are winless in three matches. Yet if leading scorers Josip Brekalo and Antonio Sanabria can find their touch, Ivan Jurić’s men could make things difficult for the hosts.
Torino haven’t won against Juventus since 2015 but these meetings tend to be close calls. Out of the last 10 matches, two have ended in draws and another five have been decided by a one-goal margin.
The stage is set for another classic.
A hop, skip, and a long, long jump from Italy is another derby with even more at stake.
One of the most awaited clashes each year, the Basque derby has it all: a deep historical rivalry, thrilling atmospheres and heaps of drama.
Real Sociedad hold the upper hand heading into the clash going unbeaten in the last five meetings again their rivals. However, Athletic Club have impressed lately having knocked out both Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.
What is more, Sunday’s match sees both clubs continue their push for European football next season. The visitors currently occupy the Europa Conference League spot and the hosts could be one point back with a win.
A title is up for grabs this weekend in Brazil with the Supercopa do Brasil scheduled for Sunday.
Having won the Brasileirão Série A title, as well as the Copa do Brasil, Atlético Mineiro are walking into the final as favourites despite making their first appearance.
Since both titles went to Atlético, this year’s final sees them take on Flamengo, who finished runners-up in the league. The twist is that Flamengo are also eyeing a treble having won the last two editions of the competition.
The reigning champions, however, have only beat Atlético once in their last four meetings.
We could be in for a thriller between these two sides with a potential penalty shootout set to decide the winner.
Which one of these spicy fixtures will cause the most drama?
