Sol Campbell

Campbell opted against extending his Tottenham Hotspur contract in 2001 despite previously stating his intention publicly to do so.

On July 3 2001 a press conference at Arsenal was held to announce a new signing and to the surprise of everyone in attendance it was the defender who turned up to shake Arsene Wenger’s hand after moving from their north London rivals.

One of the most controversial transfers in the history of British football.

Fernando Torres

The Spanish striker was adored by Liverpool supporters during his three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield.

Torres was one of the best strikers in Europe, scoring 65 goals in a red shirt, including seven against their closest rivals at the time – Chelsea.

No Liverpool fan ever thought they would wake up and see what they saw on January 31 2011, one of their heroes donning the blue shirt of the side from west London. A British record transfer fee at the time of £50m wasn’t enough to stop the love turn into hate.

Players moving between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have become a common event but this one really hurt.

Lewandowski was the spearhead of a Dortmund side that won two Bundesliga titles and reached the Champions League final in 2013.

A move to Bayern followed, and to rub salt in to the wounds of the BVB fanbase he moved on a free transfer as well.

It’s worked out quite well ever since.

Roberto Baggio

You know there are heavy feelings involved when there are riots on the streets following the announcement of your departure.

Thats what happened when Baggio completed a move from Fiorentina to Juventus for a then world record fee in 1990.

Baggio later refused to take a penalty against Fiore goalkeeper Gianmatteo Mareggini when the two sides met in April 1991 stating he knew Mareggini ‘too well’.

Robin van Persie

Arsenal fans had a tough enough time dealing with losing the likes of Samir Nasri and Gaël Clichy to Manchester City.

To then lose their talisman Van Persie in 2012 to the club they used to challenge at the top of the table really left a sour taste.

Watching him score 26 goals as he fired Manchester United to a 20th league title was the real kick in the teeth.
