There’s only one place to start: Istanbul.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team of superstars raced into a 3-0 lead before half-time and Liverpool’s hopes of a fifth European Cup were looking lost.

Rafael Benítez got a hold of his squad at half-time, brought on Dietmar Hamann before Jerzy Dudek defied gravity with an extra-time save from Andriy Shevchenko and summoned the spirit of Bruce Grobbelaar to save two penalties.

Thomas Tuchel and BVB rolled into Anfield and went 2-0 up inside 10 minutes.

Divock Origi netted three minutes after half-time to restore confidence before Marco Reus appeared to put the game to bed nine minutes later.

However, the hosts were not dead and Philippe Coutinho and Mamadou Sakho netted to lead an assault on the Kop end for the closing stages.

Then up stepped an unlikely hero. Dejan Lovren rose highest to James Milner’s cross to book their place in the Europa League semi-finals in the 91st minute.

Istanbul wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for this night.

Liverpool were staring elimination at the Champions League group stage when Rivaldo put the Greeks ahead in the 26th minute.

Benítez’s men had to win by three clear goals to progress and thanks to Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Neil Mellor in the second half they were nearly there.

Then with four minutes to go, the ball was guided into the path of Steven Gerrard at the edge of the box and the rest is history.

Liverpool won their second Uefa Cup trophy in dramatic fashion.

Bob Paisley’s men fell two goals behind to the Belgian side inside the first 15 minutes in the first leg of the final at Anfield but goals from Ray Kennedy, Jimmy Case and Kevin Keegan in a six minute burst in the second half swung the tie in their favour.

A 1-1 draw in the second leg in Belgium saw the trophy come to Merseyside.

Liverpool came back to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final 3-0 from the first game and having to overcome Lionel Messi and co without Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino.

That didn’t stop them. Origi scored seven minutes in before Gini Wijnaldum replaced the injured Andy Robertson at half-time and headed two goals in within two minutes of each other.

Then in the 79th minute the only player awake inside the whole stadium was Trent Alexander-Arnold. His instinctive, improvised corner found Origi in the box who completed the ultimate turnaround.
