Southampton F.C. is one of the oldest football clubs in England. It was formed in November 1885 when St. Mary's Y.M.A. (Young Men's Association) decided its members would benefit from creating a football team. Now, it is one of the richest, most popular and consistent clubs playing in the country's top-flight league, the English Premier League (EPL).

Also called 'The Saints', Southampton's centuries-worth of history is remarkable. While they haven't secured a premiership title, they have remained a great contender ever since they got promoted in 1966.

Part of the Saints' longevity is the players who keep on making notable records for the team. Recently, legendary striker Matt Le Tissier made headlines in the sports news department of various online sportsbooks for being shortlisted for EPL's Hall of Fame. Want to know more about which Southampton players made historical records? Here are five names who made great impressions:

Terry Pain: Most appearances

Terence 'Terry' Lionel Paine made the most number of appearances for the Saints more than 800 times. He played for the club for 17 years (1957-1974), transferred to Hereford United until 1977 and Cheltenham Town up to 1980. Oozing confidence was the best trait associated with him. After all, he initially played as a winger with superb ball-crossing skills where he could 'land on a ball on a sixpence'.

Mick Channon: Most goals

Michael 'Mick' Roger Channon had quite an extensive senior career with more than 10 clubs. He played for the Saints twice: one from 1965 to 1977 and the second from 1979 to 1982. Compared to the other teams he joined, it was the former where he made the most number of goals — scoring over 180 strikes. Collectively, he scored more than 250 goals, including when he represented the English national team in the 1970s.

Derek Reeves: Most goals in one season

Derek Reeves played for the Saints from 1954 to 1962 with 273 appearances and 145 goals — the highest in his career. In just one season (1959-60), the centre forward made 44 strikes. Despite his lack of height, he was known to be a quick and bustling player with explosive finishes and heading skills inside the penalty area.

Albert Brown: Most goals in one match

Albert Frederick Brown played for two EPL clubs: Aston Villa and Southampton, with the latter as his highest recorded goals. According to statistics, pro football games have an overall average of 2.71. Yet as for Brown, he raised the bar in the match against Northampton Town on December 28, 1901, with seven goals.

Theo Walcott: Youngest Player

Theo James Walcott is currently 32 years old, but he was 16 when he played against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 6, 2005. With this record, not only was he the youngest senior Southampton player, but also in England.

Similar to Brown, most of Walcott's senior career is in the top-flight league. Apart from the Saints, to which he returned three times, he also played for Arsenal (2006 to 2018) and Everton (2018 to 2021). He made headlines in the sports news department of various publications when he received the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award in December 2006.
