Like father like son? Well, these players have surpassed their dad’s legacy in the beautiful game. Here are five footballers who are better than their fathers.
There have been many players that have had children go into football thanks to the legacy they’ve left. David Beckham‘s son Romeo Beckham is new and upcoming on the scene and recently got himself a move to the Premier League with Brentford, we have Kasper Schmeichel following in his legendary dad’s legacy and becoming a top goalkeeper and we also have Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew who followed their dad… Abedi Pele’s footsteps. Yep – we were as shocked as you were.
Now all the sons mentioned prior never really surpassed their father’s footballing greatness, or haven’t had time to yet – however, there are many footballers around the globe who are actually better than their old man.
So, with this – here are five footballers that have turned out to be better than their fathers.
You just knew he was coming first. Erling Haaland has already cemented himself as not only better than his dad ever was but as one of the world’s greatest players at the humble age of 22.
His father is called Alfie Haaland, who used to play as a right-back or midfielder in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Manchester City, whilst also accumulating 34 caps for Norway.
Despite a successful career, it appears his son will go on to absolutely crush it as a footballer. He remains in the Premier League at his dad’s club as of now, but the sky really is the limit in the life of Erling Haaland.
The second player on our list to surpass his father’s current legacy is Leroy Sane.
Sane has endured a marvellous career so far, achieving big things at Manchester City winning numerous Premier League titles and doing the exact same with his current club Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
His father is Souleymane Jean Sané, who played as a striker for a variety of German clubs in the 80s and the 90s. He was certainly a prolific goalscorer but achieved a lot less than his son has done in his career.
Our third player is the only goalkeeper on the list, Wojciech Szczesny.
His father Maciej was also a goalkeeper, who won 7 caps for Poland and won the Polish League 4 times with 3 different clubs, in addition to three Polish Cups, one League Cup and a Polish Supercup – so he did endure a very successful career in his homeland.
However, Wojciech had the almost impossible task of replacing at Juventus. There are few bigger shoes to fill in football, and he’s done a remarkable job.
The most recent of entries into this list, but now he’s cemented himself into footballing folklore for the rest of eternity, and that’s none other than Alexis Mac Allister.
His father was Carlos Mac Allister, – a retired footballer that played for Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors, winning three caps for Argentina in 1993. But this is nothing compared to what his son has already achieved, being an integral part of the World Cup 2022 winning squad.
Last but not least, our only current retired player on the list is Frank Lampard.
Frank will go down as arguably Chelsea‘s best-ever player, and currently their top goalscorer – but his dad wasn’t half bad either!
His dad shared the same name, which meant there was a huge legacy to fulfil for his son. Frank Lampard Sr. spent basically his full career with West Ham United, notching 551 caps for the Hammers and becoming a club legend in the process.
However, what his boy went on to do was nothing short of extraordinary – winning Premier League titles, a Champions League, breaking records and so much more.
Sorry, Frank Sr. – but your lad’s outdone you here.
