Plymouth Argyle’s January plans could well look very differently now following the departure of Steven Schumacher.

Schumacher was able to break the club record fee twice, bringing in both Morgan Whittaker and Bali Mumba on permanent deals after they excelled on loan in the title-winning campaign.

The aforementioned duo represented a large chunk of the money spent but Schumacher is no longer the man prowling the Home Park technical area.

With January edging ever closer, here are 5 players that Plymouth Argyle could look into signing at cut-prices, as their respective contracts are expiring next summer.

Charlie Goode

Kicking things off in the Premier League and Brentford defender Charlie Goode is the man in question.

Centre-back is a position of need for the Devonshire team given just how porous their defence has been at times, not to mention the injury issues that Brendan Galloway and co have had to deal with.

Goode signed a four-year deal in 2020 with the option of a one-year extension but given he has played so little football for the Bees, a move could be on the cards.

Even in the Championship, he made just eight appearances for Brentford and hardly featured when on loan at Sheffield United and Blackpool, so a position in the Argyle squad as a rotation player would work well for all parties.

Daniel Jebbison

Centre-back is one position of need and the other that has to be addressed is at the other end of the field, upfront.

Daniel Jebbison has been in the top-flight with Sheffield United on two separate occasions and he hasn’t been an important figure either time, playing just 284 minutes the first time around.

On the south coast meanwhile, Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu both went off injured in the recent win over Rotherham United and Ben Waine isn’t fancied as a suitable option to lead the line.

Meshing all of this information together and the Pilgrims pursuing Jebbison makes plenty of sense, particularly given that the youngster is out of contract next year.

Devante Cole

Another potential option for a new striker at Home Park is Devante Cole.

His situation is very different to that of Jebbison in that he is currently thriving in League One, with 12 goals and two assists to his name (as of December 21st).

The Barnsley forward went flying out of the blocks at the start of the campaign and has nearly reached his tally from last season already this time around.

Cole does have Championship experience though and he managed just one goal in his 24 outings in 2021/22.

This could be a slight concern but he has clearly refined his game since dropping down a division and so he may well be ready to bounce back.

Wes Harding

Of the five players on this list, Wes Harding is the only one to be playing in the same division as Plymouth Argyle at the moment.

He was something of an EFL stalwart for Birmingham City and Rotherham United and he is now in his first season with Millwall.

The Jamaican international only penned a deal lasting a single season though and so could be available, when the transfer window opens, for a pre-contract agreement, or to be snapped up for a smaller fee there and then.

Clinton Mola

Clinton Mola is the third defensive option to feature on this list, pointing to just how porous the Argyle backline has been this season.

Only three teams have a worse xGa than their 1.54 at the time of writing, something which will be alarming to the powers that be at Home Park.

Similarly to Harding, Mola only signed a one-year deal for his latest club, Reading, but he has featured much less for the Royals than Harding has for the Lions.

He is just 22 and has versatility on his side so, again, if Argyle are looking to bolster the backline, this England U21 international is a potential target.
