Former Hamburg boss Tim Walter is on Hull City's list of managerial candidates, according to The Telegraph.

The Tigers are in need of a new manager following the shock dismissal of Liam Rosenior yesterday, with owner Acun Ilicali deciding to pull the trigger after the club's failure to reach the play-offs earlier this month.

Many people had thought that Rosenior had done a sterling job at the MKM Stadium, taking over from Shota Arveladze when they weren't in the best position and transforming them into a team that could compete for promotion.

The final few months of the season didn't go according to plan though.

Having made plenty of promising winter additions, Hull were expected to secure a top-six place, but they were unable to achieve this goal in the end and the season ended on a disappointing note, with a defeat against Plymouth Argyle.

Even with this in mind though, few people would have expected a change at this stage, with Rosenior bringing plenty of stability to the East Yorkshire club.

Ilicali has been criticised heavily on social media for this decision - and the Turkish businessman will need to ensure that he gets the next appointment right to get fans onside.

He has been praised for a lot of his work since succeeding the Allam family, but the decision to part ways with Rosenior is an extremely risky one and only a good appointment will silence dissent.

Tim Walter on Hull City's radar

Walter, according to The Telegraph, is a "strong contender" for the top job at Hull and is thought to be "hugely admired" by the Championship club.

This could put him in a strong position to take the job, but he is likely to be just one of many candidates on Ilicali's shortlist, as the Tigers' owner looks to appoint the right man.

Walter has a fair amount of managerial experience on his CV, previously managing Stuttgart and also spending time at Hamburg, being sacked by the latter back in February.

He was able to keep the German outfit at the top end of the country's second tier for a decent chunk of his stay at the club, but couldn't guide them to the Bundesliga in the end.

Appointing Tim Walter would be a big gamble for Hull City

Is Walter a clear upgrade on Rosenior?

A lot of people would say no - and this is why it would be a big risk if Walter was given the job.

He may have more managerial experience than Rosenior, but considering Walter is 48, he doesn't have that much more experience on his CV than his potential predecessor does at 39.

You can't help but feel Ilicali has made a big mistake - and unless he appoints someone that the vast majority of fans can get behind - the decision to sack Rosenior could continue to be a talking point in the coming months.

It will be fascinating to see what happens at the MKM Stadium.
