Sheffield Wednesday are set to part ways with head coach Danny Rohl, with less than two weeks to go before the start of the new Championship season.

Sheffield Wednesday's summer of tumult seems likely to continue, with reports that they have reached an agreement for head coach Danny Rohl to leave the club by mutual consent and Henrik Pedersen looking set to take over.

This has been a summer of turbulence for Sheffield Wednesday, with a transfer embargo having been put in place over the late payment of wages, money due to HMRC and previous transfers, takeover talk which is being hampered by the owner's unrealistic valuation of the club, and concerns over the safety of one of the stands at Hillsborough.

Wednesday finished the 2024-25 season in 12th place in the Championship, but they've already lost their two highest-scoring players from last season, Josh Windass and Michael Smith, and there are few guarantees that wages will be paid on time at the end of July.

But now a huge change could be coming, with reports that Rohl could be on his way out of Hillsborough with less than two weeks to go before the start of the new season.

Rohl to leave by mutual agreement; Pedersen likely to take over

The Sheffield Star reports that Wednesday are close to an arrangement by which Rohl would leave the club by mutual consent, with assistant Pedersen, 47, most "likely" to take over duties.

The timing of the decision is less than convenient, with there being less than two weeks to go before the start of the new Championship season, but it had previously been reported that Pedersen was promised the position should Rohl leave, so at least there shouldn't have to be a panicked search for someone to step into the breach at short notice.

Alan Biggs further reports that Pedersen taking on the job could be key to keeping Barry Bannan at Hillsborough - a priority given the exodus that's gone already this summer.

Rohl's successor is going to have his work cut out to keep Wednesday in the Championship

Rohl had been widely expected to leave the club earlier in the summer and was linked to other positions in both England and Germany, but it's believed that a release clause in his contract proved prohibitive to clubs that may have been interested in taking him on.

The head coach didn't return for the first two weeks of the team's pre-season training, and when he did, it was necessary to hold "clear the air" talks with players and staff. It would now seem to be the case that a decision has been reached that Rohl's return has not worked out as might have been hoped for, and that it's best to move on.

Although the presumption is Pedersen will take over the running of the first team, it's already clear that he'll have his work cut out to keep Sheffield Wednesday up next season. The transfer embargo in place severely limits the players that can be brought into the club, while some extremely experienced players have already left this summer. Whilst this wouldn't be Pedersen's first head coach position, it's difficult to imagine a more challenging one, considering the current condition of the club.
