FC Barcelona have shifted focus to potential incomings, outgoings, and contract renewals ahead of the 2025/26 season. Having completed the domestic treble this season, Hansi Flick will be keen to take it one step further.

Sporting director Deco has been ensuring the renewal of players’ contracts at the club to secure their long-term commitment. It’s not just Lamine Yamal and Raphinha’s contracts that have been extended, with even Hansi Flick signing a new deal.

One player that Barcelona want to sign to a new contract as soon as possible is Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch maestro’s deal at the club expires in 2026, and if they don’t renew him now, they risk the possibility of losing him for free.

Now, as per journalist Gerard Romero via Barca Times, the 28-year-old Barcelona captain has spoken to his lawyers to terminate his contract with his agent Ali Dursun, in an attempt to speed up the renewal process with the club.

Frenkie has had a brilliant 2025 in a Barcelona shirt, and by the time the season came to an end, he had established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet for Hansi Flick. The €45 million-rated Dutch star seemed to be very happy too.

Now, after this latest development, it seems like Frenkie has wanted to sign a new deal for quite some time, but it is his agent who is holding it up. Thus, it makes sense that the Dutchman is willing to let go of him.

Huge coup

If Barcelona manage to sign Frenkie to a new, long-term contract, it would be a huge coup for the club. At his best, there aren’t many midfielders in the world who are better than the Dutchman, and that’s exactly what the Catalan club needs.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Frenkie and if he does let go of his agent and put pen to paper on a new contract with the club. Only time will tell us how it plays out.
