The summer of 2017 saw a huge overhaul at Molineux as Wolves went on a spending spree as they looked to win promotion to the Premier League.

Manager Nuno Espírito Santo was appointed, and he brought a number of quality players to the club, like Ruben Neves from Porto and Diogo Jota, who joined on loan from Atlético Madrid.

Jota had never played a first-team game for Atlético, but he had spent the previous season on loan at Porto, where he had impressed, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists in 38 appearances.

Given he had played for one of Portugal's biggest clubs the previous season and had featured eight times in the Champions League, it looked like a remarkable coup for a Championship side, and that's exactly how it turned out.

After joining on loan for the 2017/18 season, Jota showed exactly why he was so highly-rated in Portugal.

Predominantly playing on the wing, the Atlético loanee scored 17 times in 44 Championship appearances as his side won the Championship title and won promotion to the Premier League.

Wolves looked a class above that season, and players like Jota and Neves were clearly too good for the Championship.

After just half a season on loan, Wolves made Jota's signing a permanent one, paying Atlético a reported fee of €14m, a hefty fee for a Championship club, but it was clear that Wolves were going places.

With Wolves winning promotion to the Championship with relative ease, it remained to be seen how they'd cope in the Premier League, but Jota and his teammates fared very well.

The attacker scored 10 goals in 37 appearances, including nine in the league, as they reached the FA Cup semi-final and finished 7th in the Premier League, qualifying for the Europa League qualifying rounds.

The 2019/20 season would prove even more successful for Jota, and he scored 16 times in 48 games, helping his side reach the Europa League quarter-finals where they were beaten by Sevilla, and another 7th place finish in the league.

The Europa League defeat would be his final appearance in a Wolves shirt, and brought the curtain down a very successful spell at the club.

Diego Jota made Wolves a lot of money with his move to Liverpool

After impressing during his three-year spell at Wolves, Jota made the move to Premier League champions Liverpool in the 2020 summer transfer window.

The move to Anfield cost Liverpool a fee of £41million, potentially rising to £45million, so it was clear that Wolves made a huge profit on the €14millon they paid for him two-and-half-years prior.

Since joining Liverpool, Jota has thrived and has been part of a side that has won the League Cup twice, an FA Cup, reached the Champions League final and are currently fighting for the Premier League title.

In hindsight, it seems crazy that a player of Jota's quality began his career in English football playing in the Championship, and how impressive it was that Wolves managed to sign a player who'd been playing in the Champions League the season before.

Whilst Wolves supporters would have been disappointed to lose Jota after just three seasons, they will appreciate that the Portuguese international leaving made the club a lot of money.

The last few seasons have been an incredible journey for Wolves supporters, and Jota will always be remembered for playing a key role in the club's journey to the Premier League.
